Curriculum

Sophomore Year Curriculum

  • Students admitted into the MILEAP program in late spring.

  • Upon admission, an initial meeting with student, parent/guardian and assigned Family Advocate to review program components and set up plan for check-in over the summer

  • Student and his/her parent/guardian sign a commitment agreement that is binding through the duration of participation

    • The MISD Request for Information for communication between MIHS and Family Advocate is signed at the time of application

  • Student and Family Advocate discuss extracurricular activities (a minimum of 1 activity per quarter) for fall quarter of junior year

    • Financial support discussed, if needed, for extracurricular activities

    • Once approved by Family Advocate, the plan is signed by student and Family Advocate 

  • Introductory meeting between student, Family Advocate and MIHS Counselor (may take place end of sophomore year or beginning of junior year depending on scheduling availability)

  • Student is assigned MILEAP approved College Counselor and begins third party vendor’s curriculum 

  • Family Advocate completes progress summary form after all meetings and sends to student with copy to college counselor and MILEAP Director

  • Student checks the MIHS and PTSA websites over the summer for college prep information and events

Junior Year Curriculum

  • Progress meetings (2-3 per month) between student and Family Advocate for the school year

    • Parent/guardian participation in meetings is optional

  • Introductory meeting between student, Family Advocate and MIHS Counselor (if did not occur in sophomore year)

  • Student takes Mock SAT and/or ACT tests

  • Student assigned to MILEAP approved SAT/ACT test preparation vendor, if needed, and begins third party vendor’s curriculum

  • Student assigned to MILEAP approved Financial Aid Counselor, if services not provided by College Counselor

  • Student and Family Advocate discuss extracurricular activities plan (a minimum of 1 activity per quarter) for school year

    • Financial support discussed, if needed, for extracurricular activities

    • Once approved by Family Advocate, the plan is signed by student and Family Advocate

  • Student regularly checks the MIHS and PTSA websites for college prep information and events

  • Family Advocate gathers input from MIHS counselor and College Counselor for meeting with student and parent/guardian in June to discuss college application plan and status

    • Family Advocate completes and sends a progress summary form to student, parent and MILEAP Director

  • Student and Family Advocate discuss intended summer activities plan (a minimum of 20 hours per week) for job, internship, volunteer activities, sports, music, etc. In addition to these activities, student must work with their College Counselor to complete ALL college applications and a working draft of ALL individual college essays prior to the start of school in the fall. In the fall of Senior year, the only college related work to be completed will be finalizing applications and essays for submittal, and completing FAFSA and CSS Profile (for those schools requiring it).

    • Financial support discussed, if needed, for summer activities.

    • Once approved by Family Advocate, the plan is signed by student and Family Advocate

  • Family Advocate completes progress summary form after all meetings and sends to student with copy to college counselor and MILEAP Director

Senior Year Curriculum

  • Student submits a short essay (1-2 pages) describing his/her summer experience and how it contributed to his/her development

  • Family Advocate reminds student that the FAFSA and CSS Profiles (if required) open on October 1. Student and Parent must complete and submit these financial aid forms by October 15. Student’s College Counselor is available to answer questions and assist with completing the forms

  • Student, with guidance from her/his College Counselor, finalizes all college applications and essays and submits as early as possible

  • Monthly progress meetings between student and Family Advocate for the school year

    • Parent/guardian participation in meetings is optional

  • Student and Family Advocate discuss extracurricular activities plan (a minimum of 1 activity per quarter) for school year

    • Financial support discussed, if needed, for extracurricular activities

    • Once approved by Family Advocate, the plan is signed by student and Family Advocate

  • Student regularly checks the MIHS and PTSA websites for college information and events

  • Student and Family Advocate discuss intended summer activities plan until college departure (a minimum of 20 hours per week) for job, internship, volunteer activities, sports, music, etc.

    • Financial support discussed, if needed, for summer activities

    • Once approved by Family Advocate, the plan is signed by student and Family Advocate

  • Family Advocate completes progress summary form after all meetings and sends to student with copy to college counselor and MILEAP Director

College Freshman Year Curriculum

  • Family Advocate should check in with student regularly.  Recommend by phone or email once a month though frequency can be reduced over time if student is doing well

    • Family Advocate completes progress summary form after all meetings and sends to student and MILEAP Director

  • Family Advocate should encourage the student to get involved at the start of the school year with first-generation club/advisor at the college

  • Family Advocate should encourage the student to meet her/his academic advisor early at the start of the school year to establish a relationship, seek tutoring (if needed), enroll in Federal TRIO program, if needed, and available at the college

  • If student intends to take advantage of Work Study program, he/she must apply at college Bursar’s office at the start of the school year.  Some schools allow students to arrange Work Study before arriving on campus.

  • A care package is a nice reminder to student that she/he is supported. Around Valentine’s Day, send a small care package with “Thinking of You” card.  (MILEAP will reimburse FA if desired).

  • As an incoming freshman, FAFSA will have been completed for freshman year.  FAFSA must be applied for each year thereafter. FAFSA opens on October 1; MILEAP requires completion by October 15. Family Advocate should remind student about the deadline and that student should be in contact with college Bursar’s office.
